Cards are the workhorse of Caribbean and Latin American commerce, and they account for around 98% of the volume we process. That is not an accident. The networks are global, familiar and trusted, they handle refunds and disputes reliably, and they work for a tourist arriving from anywhere. Any conversation about local payment methods has to start there.
Local methods are additive. They exist because in every regional market there is a segment that does not have a card, does not want to use one for a particular purchase, or simply prefers a rail that feels closer to home.
What that looks like by market
In the Dutch Caribbean the common alternative is Pay by Bank, where the customer approves the payment inside her own banking app and the merchant sees confirmation in seconds, with no card in the picture.
Move south and it widens. In Brazil, Pix is the account-to-account rail run by the central bank, used by well over 100 million people, around the clock. In Mexico, SPEI plays a similar role and OXXO cash vouchers remain a major channel for buyers who deal in cash. Colombia has PSE. Argentina has Mercado Pago and MODO. Almost every country has 1 or 2 rails that are locally dominant and largely invisible to a merchant based abroad.
The argument is not replacement
It is capture. A tourist on your site will almost always reach for Visa or Mastercard. A local buyer in São Paulo will often reach for Pix, and if it is not there she may go elsewhere. A buyer in Mexico may prefer OXXO. Every method that fits a real segment of your buyers is an order that would otherwise have been abandoned.
We support 70+ local payment methods across 30+ territories alongside every major card brand. They appear on the same checkout, use the same fraud tooling, settle through the same local banking partner that handles your card acquiring, and report into the same dashboard.
A rule of thumb
It is not replace cards, and it is not add everything. It is add the 2 or 3 methods that fit the countries you actually sell to. For a Brazilian storefront, cards plus Pix. For a Mexican one, cards plus OXXO and SPEI. Small changes, real incremental revenue.
